Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 - the lesser-known facts about the Men’s World Cup.

The upcoming Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 is less than 2 weeks away. It will be held at the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneshwar and the Birsa Munda international hockey stadium in Rourkela, India. It will kick off on the 13th of January and wrap up on the 29th of the same month. A total of 16 teams are going to participate this year divided into four groups. Four groups will consist of four teams each.

This will the 15th edition of the tournament which has a very rich history. So today we are going to divulge some of the lesser-known facts about the Men’s World Cup.

-          The tournament changed its format

The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup started off as a biennial tournament. After its inception in 1971, the successive World Cup happened in 1973. In 1978 the tournament happened after a gap of three years for the first time. However, in 1982 the tournament went to be contested in the format we know today.

However, after many years that continuity got broken because of the better bid from Hockey India to host the event in January 2023, instead of in 2022. As a result, the FIH had no other alternative but to reschedule the event from 2022 to 2023.

-          More inclusion of teams over the years

The FIH has set no requirements or limitations on the size of the competition. The 1971 Cup included only 10 nations. It was the smallest World Cup. The 1978 Cup featured 14 nations. 2002, and 2018 Cups featured 16 nations. The remaining 10 World Cups have featured 12 nations.

There were talks about raising the number of teams to 24 in the 2023 edition of the World Cup. However, that change will not be happening.

-          Pakistan’s Nur Khan conceived the idea of the World Cup

Pakistan’s Air Marshall Nur Khan made his proposition of the World Cup to the FIH via the editor of the World Hockey Magazine, Patrick Rowley. Their idea was approved on 26 October 1969 and adopted by the FIH Council at a meeting in Brussels on 12 April 1970. The FIH decided that the inaugural World Cup would be held in October 1971, in Pakistan.

-          The Hockey World Cup trophy was designed by Bashir Moojid

Bashir Moojid created the Hockey World Cup trophy. Moojid was an Air Marshall in the Pakistani Army. The trophy was formally handed to FIH President Rene Frank by Mr H.E Masood, the Pakistani Ambassador to Belgium on 27th March 1971. The trophy comprises a silver cup with an intricate floral design, surmounted by a globe of the world in silver and gold.

It is placed on a high blade base and inlaid with ivory.  At its peak is a model hockey stick and ball.

-          New Tie Breaker Rules for 2023 World Cup

It should be noted that for each win in the pool stage, the team will be rewarded 2 points. However, in case the match ends in a draw- both sides will be given 1 point each. However, if two or more teams remain unseparated on more than one parameter in the table then the tie-breaker rule will come into the picture.

Supposing the teams end on equal points, in this case the team with more number of wins will be given the higher rank in the group. But if there emerges a scenario when both the points as well as the number of matches won for two teams are equal, in that case, the goal difference will differentiate the teams implying the difference between the number of goals scored and conceded will be the tie-breaker.

The team, in this, which has a better goal difference will be the higher placed side in the group. In a rare scenario if even than the teams remain tied then the team which has scored more goals will get the preference. Assuming the two teams are still tied then the result of the head-to-head clash between them will determine which team will get the higher rank.

Overall Winners

The Continent of Europe has the greatest number of World Cup medals in their tally. They have a total of six titles to their name. Out of which the Netherlands won three, Germany won two and Belgium. The Red Lions were in fact the latest addition after winning the world cup in the last edition in 2018.

Europe is followed by Asia which has won five titles. Out of these four titles belong to Pakistan and one to India. Oceania is next with its three titles. Ironically all those titles belong to Australia. America and Africa are yet to open their account.

Pakistan holds the record for having the greatest number of World Cup wins in their resume. They won the inaugural edition in 1971 beating Spain 1-0 in their opponent’s backyard in Barcelona.

The Green Machines won consecutively after that in 1978 and 1982 beating the Netherlands and West Germany respectively. Their last victory came in 1994. Pakistan beat the Dutch yet again in this encounter to capture their fourth World Cup.

Malaysian Men’s Hockey Team participation and final standings as below:

Out of 15th edition, Malaysian team played 9 times and didn't qualify for 6 times. Previously it was 12 teams World Cup (except for 2002 KL WC) and 16 teams was introduced for 2018 World Cup onwards.

Netherlands 1973             Eleventh place

Last time Azlan Shah tournament held in 2019 which was won by South Korea beating India in the final, which was there 3rd title. Best player of the tournament was Surender Kumar.

Most Azlan Shah tournament is won by Australia (10 times) then comes India with 5 titles. And Pakistan, South Korea with 3 titles each.

So mark down your calendar guys it will be an exciting event.

MALAYSIAN HOCKEY AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES & Details/Prediction for 2022 Birmingham Games

Hockey is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since 1998 when Kuala Lumpur hosted the games. Hockey is a core sport and must be included in the sporting program of each edition of the Games.

Malaysian Men’s Hockey:

Malaysian team withdrew from 2022 Birmingham Games and the reason best known to them but I disagree with such decision as quality international matches is key or else send a mixed team and now with Asian Games postponed next year 2023 it backfired the decision. Wasted opportunity.

Since hockey introduced in 1998, Malaysian Men participated in 5 Commonwealth Games and winning a silver medal in 1998 Kuala Lumpur and bronze in 2006 Melbourne Games. Last Games in Australia we finished 5th.

Australia Men’s team won all 6 Games since 1998 to 2018. And New Zealand won twice silver in 2002 & 2018 Games with India 2 silver medals in 2010 & 2014 games. Pakistan won 1 silver in 2006 & bronze in 2002.

Overall, 14 Nations has participated and Ghana will be the first timer in such Games.

Malaysian Men’s best [performance is winning Silver Medal in 1998 KL Commonwealth Games.

Malaysian Women’s Hockey:

Malaysian Women withdrew from 2022 Birmingham Games.

Malaysian women never break in to semifinal stage and best finished 5th in 2006 Games.

Participated 6 times since 1998 to 2018 but decided not to play in 2022 Games.

Australia won 5 times with India breaking the dominance by winning Gold in 2002.

Overall, 16 Nations has played in such Games.

Most Successful 6 Hockey Nation based on all Time Medal Tally – for Men & Women from 1998-2018.

Australia won 12 Medals – 10 Gold with 1 Silver & 1 Bronze

New Zealand won 7 Medals – 1 Gold with 3 Silver & 3 Bronze

India won 4 Medals – 1 Gold & 3 Silver

England won 9 Medals – 3 Silver with 6 Bronze

Malaysia won 2 Medals – 1 Silver & 1 Bronze

Pakistan won 2 Medals – 1 Silver with 1 Bronze

2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES – 29TH JULY TO 8TH AUGUST 2022.

Field hockey is among the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham, England. This will be the seventh staging of hockey at the Commonwealth Games since its debut in 1998, and the second staging within England specifically.

The tournaments are scheduled to take place between 29 July and 8 August 2022.

Men:

10 Teams will participate with Group A – Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland & South Africa whereas Group B – India, Canada, England, Wales & Ghana.

Women:

10 Teams will participate with Group A – India, Canada, England, Wales & Ghana whereas Group B – Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Kenya & South Africa

Format:

Each will play 4 matches at Pool Stage and top 2 from each group will play in Semis and followed by Finals and Bronze Medal matches. There will be 3 Classification matches – 9/10;7/8 & 5/6.

Please see the grouping/schedule below for Men & Women based on Birmingham time.

My Prediction:

Men – the Semifinals will be Australia vs India & England vs New Zealand - Finals will be between Australia vs England and India will win the bronze Medal.

Women - the Semifinals will be Australia vs India & England vs New Zealand – Finals will be between Australia vs England and New Zealand will win the bronze Medal.

The 2022 Games starting in 3 days’ time and enjoy it.

Asian Hockey struggles except for India...

Asian Hockey struggles except for India...

Writing this piece after watching the matches in the ongoing Jakarta Asia Cup 2022.

After comparing between the quality of other Continental Championship and following FIH Pro League teams, Asia Cup quality is far far behind in standards. Summary - most Asian teams has lost their competitive edge in World hockey except for India still maintains at top 5 and able to compete with European and Aus/NZ with Arg teams.

Korea was Silver medalist in 2000 Sydney Olympics and ranked no 2 in world hockey but now struggles to return to top 10.

Pakistan was 1994 World Champions and No 1 with consistently playing at Olympic games and failed to qualify to Tokyo Olympics and currently wants to return to world stage.

Malaysia used to be an Olympic nation and last played in 2000 Sydney Olympics and in the last 2018 World Cup exited after 3 matches without any win and finished 15th. At World Cup level best finish no 4 in 1975 & no 8 in 2002 World and winning silver medal at 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Japanese raised their standards due Tokyo Olympics program since 2013 when they were awarded to host it and invested in 2 Junior World Cup cycles 2013 & 2016. They showed promising but at Asia Continental level only and couldn't break into top 10 even winning the 2018 Asian Games Gold and their results didn't reflect well in Tokyo Olympics.

The rest such as Oman, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka merely participation level and the gap is too wide between them and top 5 Asian teams - India Pak Msia Korea and Japan.

On another note, China was doing well in certain Continental events and all of sudden detiorating badly after hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. Currently, not participating any events and being stagnant.

The next tier such as Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and others are only good for development level competition and it may take miracle for them to break into Top 8 in Asia and narrow window to play in Olympics and World Cups.

And current Asian Games or Asia Cup championship competitive level has been in low quality compare to 1950s to 2000 where there were 4 teams in Top 10 world ranking such as India, Pak, Korea & Malaysia and minimum there will be 4 Asian Teams in every Olympic cycles but currently only India in Tokyo Olympics either than Japan as host, therefore it indicates that the quality of current Asia Continental Hockey Championship standards is poor compare with European Championship where there is 5 European teams in Top 10 and at least 5 European teams plays in Olympics. Outside European dominance, only Australia, New Zealand and Argentina could compete with them. And France, Ireland & Wales is on the rise and will battle for Paris Olympics. It may end up with 6 European teams in Paris Olympics or 50% participation from Europe.

It's a long winding road for Asian Teams to return to its former glory days. India is maintaining their standards and others such as Pak, Korea, Malaysia and Japan is trying very hard to close the gap but it may take 2 or 3 Olympic cycles.

But I believe Asian Hockey Federation must do more to uplift the standards of Asian Hockey so that one day there will be 4 Asian Teams in Top 10 and minimum 4 Asian teams, consistently playing at Olympics and World Cup levels and imposing a strong challenge to be on podium finish.

It requires a massive transformation by Asian Hockey nations , firstly must get the right person in the right position with modern international hockey knowledge with latest sports science and technology involvement to manage the sports effectively and efficiently.

Thanking you.

Malaysia Chances - Hero Asia Cup 2022 Jakarta 23 May - 1 Jun 2022

*Hero Asia Cup 2022 Jakarta

23 May - 1 Jun 2022*

Malaysia Men's Hockey will participate in this event and placed in an easier Group B with Oman, Korea & Bangladesh whereas the Group A is called as Group of Death as India, Pakistan and Japan in same group.

There will be a total of 24 matches with top 2 from each group qualifies for Super 4 where this 4 teams plays round robin to be placed in Finals and 3/4 position.

Due to pandemic - FIH has allocated 4 slots for Asia with India as the host. Top 4 teams from this event including India will make it to 2023 World Cup in India early next year.

Thanks to FIH as now there will be 16 teams world cup rather than 12 teams, which allows many other below ranked teams to qualify.

What is Malaysia chances?

A 2023 World Cup ticket is a prerequisite for our Malaysian team. Due to in an easier group, we should qualify for Super 4s. First match against Oman tomorrow is crucial and results with Korea on Tuesday will be the first indication for Malaysia. Hope no any unwanted results from this first 2 matches as Oman is coached by Malaysian Coach - Lim Chiow Chuan. On another note, Malaysia last match is against Bangladesh where another Malaysian is Coaching - Gobinathan. So the first two matches will be a real test for Malaysia. There will be 3 Malaysian Coaches in this group B and will be interesting to see and gauge their strategies against each other.

On Group A - is a tough one. India send a mixed youth team, there is possibility of them not making it to Super 4s as depend on first match against Pakistan under the guidance of new Coaching structure. Japan is a dark horse and has showed that they are able to upset any top teams in any given day. Indonesia is mainly playing hosting and participation level and is coached by Malaysian Dharma.

With that, the available slots are open wide for Pak, Japan, Malaysia & Korea but Oman and Bangladesh may spring some surprises. India has qualified as host and with youth mix team, the question is what happens if they don't make it to Super 4s, then the 3/4 match will be a cracker for a last slot.

Bear in mind, every match there will be world rankings in play, therefore all Coaches will be aware of this predicament.

Malaysia should be able to qualify as we did in 2014 & 2018. But hoping no any upsets or below par performance which hinders the opportunity.

Wishing all the 8 teams the very best for the tournament and may the best teams qualify for the 2023 Men's FIH Hockey World Cup, the 15th edition of the Men's FIH Hockey World Cup, the quadrennial world championship in Rourkela, India from 13 to 29 January 2023.

MALAYSIA PATHWAY PROCESS TO PARIS OLYMPIC 2024 - Approved by IOC

Good morning everyone...

There will be a new format established and approved by IOC on the process of qualifying for Paris Olympics 2024.

Malaysia will have two chances or 2 doors to get to Paris Olympics - 2022 Asian Games (only Gold will automatically qualified) or  FIH Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

This time the format for FIH Qualifying Tournament is better and allowed greater fair play where 2 events of 8 teams with top 3 from each event qualifies - total 6 quota.

The selection of 16 teams will be made from 22 best teams from Continental and minus 6 (Host & 5 Continental Champions) the balance 16 teams will be divided to 8 to 2 different events using a snake system.

Please see below to understand better the process.

I would agree with this format than previous one where 2 matches decides and based on balloting and seeded based on rankings.

This new format provides min 4-5 matches to qualify - 3 at pool and 1/2 at classifications - SF & F with 3/4. Only top 3 will make it to Paris Olympics. Therefore, performance at Continental Championship is critical and maintaining world ranking is crucial.

Thank you to all the readers for the support.

Wishing our Malaysian Mens Team the very best towards the journey to 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.

Thanking you and stay safe always..

2nd Suggestions for Improvement at NSA

Good Day everyone...

2nd suggestion for improvement at National Sports Association (NSA).

As standard routine in election process, the affiliates will nominate and vote in the AGM to elect the bearers.

Most NSA the same bearer will be holding position at State/Affiliates while elected to hold position at NSA level.

I disagree with this due to following reasons:

1.A situation in which a person is in a position to derive personal benefit from actions or decisions made in their official capacity.

2. Playing ball to sustain his/her position.

3. Acting as Jury & Judge while making decisions

4. NSA Management will play politics and creates a clan between the system

5. Such philosophy of "your scratch my back I scrath you back". Most decision will be incline to political.

With the above reasoning, when elected at NSA level, the respective bearer must relinquish his position as automatically at State/Affiliates level.

By doing so, the quality of decision made by the Board will be optimum and the philosophy of sports above the organisation and individual will be adhered.

Every decision made will be the best interest for the sports as the bearer is no longer involved at affiliates level.

Once no longer serving at NSA level, the respective individual could return to serve the affiliates.

Thanking you...
