POTENTIAL YOUNG HOCKEY COACHES WITHOUT CLEAR PATHWAY OF COACHING EDUCATION...

There was a "Silver Lining" in the 58th Tun Abdul Razak Cup hockey tournament which ended over the weekend i.e. new cycle of young potential Coaches managing the teams.

The potential ones are such as Jiwa Mohan, Mohd Sofian, Madzli Ikmar, Selvaraju, S Kumar, Jivan Mohan, Roslan Jamaluddin, Azlan Misron, Kevinder Singh, Iman Gobi, Azrul Affendy, Ikmal Abd Jabar (Women) & Mohammad Sabri (Women) and soon to be Coaches after their playing days end are Baljit Singh, Shahrun Nabil and Ismail Abu. Others like Chairil Anwar, Shukor, Shaiful Azli, Azlan Bakar and  Zam Zam to be considered too.

There are about 20 potential young Coaches to be created to serve hockey in this Country whether is at grassroot, development or high performance levels.

Question? Do the Coaching Committee has a plan or pathway for these young potential Coaches? Answer is NO!

Pathway is a way of achieving a specified result; a course of action. If nothing is done, then these young potential Coaches will remain in their cocoon, fade away and will forever lack the latest modern international hockey training methodology.

There must be an opportunity available for them to grow as one of the top National or International standing Coaches. And there must be a plan for these young Coaches. We have been dependent on Foreign Coaches over the years and since 2015 we used 9 Foreign Consultants but achieved mediocre results. Unbelievable.

This are few suggestions to enhance these young potential Coaches:

1. Foreign League Attachment

Should negotiate with Top Foreign Countries mainly like of Germany, Holland, England, Spain, Australia and India for an Attachment Coaching Program with Government to Government understanding. For an example, could get Shell (Dutch Company) to sponsor such stints for the selected Coaches in Holland and many other German Company or Australia are based in Malaysia, speak to them and for sure they want to be part of National Service or CSR program.

2. Mentoring Program

There are many local qualified Veteran Coaches that could play a mentoring to these young Coaches. Coaches like Collin, Stephen, Tai Beng Hai, Lim Chiow Chuan, Dharmaraj, Nor Saiful, Yahya Atan & Sarjit Singh who knows modern International hockey requirements and still actively involved in Coaching.

For the 20 young potential Coaches divide them into 3 or 4 each under each Mentor Coaches and pay some token of allowance to the Mentors on a monthly basis. This will build confidence and productive partnership between young & seasoned Coaches. This method will expedite the missing bridge gap of experience and knowledge for the young Coaches.

3. Performance Plan

The young potential Coaches must be trained at early stage on how to do develop a good performance plan for teams. They must understand Macrocycles, Mesocycles and Microcycles which essentially covers General Preparation, Specific Preparation phases with Pre & In Competition details of Conditioning and Physiology Assessment.

4. Performance Support i.e. Sports Science

These young Coaches should attend Sports Sciences Courses organised by National Coaching Academy (AKK).

The key areas of support - Strength & Conditioning; Power; Nutrition; Mental Skills & Psychology; Physiology; Rehabilitation & Basic Medicine knowledge.

5. Technology & Biomechanics

It will be good if this young coaches are exposed to Biomechanics which is used by Coaches in order to gain a greater understanding of performance through modelling, simulation and measurement.

Another area is Performance Analysis which is the notational and statistical analysis of performance and Technology support which provides strategies to gain maximum advantage in term of preparation and during the play of matches.

6. Dedicated Fast-Track Coaching Program - for these 16 Coaches

There should be a fast-tracked program for these Coaches. A clear pathway of Coaching Education from Level 1 to Level 3 with Sport Sciences Accreditation of level 1 to 3. Thereafter, follow up on AHF & FIH Courses for these Coaches.

7. Local Coaching Attachment Stints

If possible, these young Coaches be attached with National Senior & Junior teams or MHL Clubs. It can be done on a rotational basis to allow them to understand the drills and expectation of being a Coach.

8. Developing Coaching Training Methodology

This area is the most crucial element. Young Coaches must learn and develop their own Coaching Training Methodology. This allows for evidence based and informed decision to be made regarding structure training to meet teams need and strategies which shall allow to perform at best, peak when appropriate and ensure optimal recovery.

9. Specific Coaching

There must be a specific Coaching Workshop such as Technical Skills, PC Attack, PC Defense, Goal Scoring, Goalkeeping, Attacking Principles and Defending Principles. And it must be inline with current International standards which incorporates modern hockey.

Conclusion:

The pathway has to be developed by some of the most prominent experts in the game to welcome and mentor new coaches as well as inspire and assist veteran coaches, including those who coach professionally. But does the current Chairman of Coaching Committee has the knowledge and qualified to address this pathway. Doubt! Worst never before a President took a role of Coaching Committee due to conflict and a President must stay above board since he chairs the Executive Board. But currently, a haywire administration is acceptable by stakeholders.

You must understand qualified coaches are critical to the long-term growth and success of our sport. The education and development of coaches will play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable athlete success from grassroots to high performance. The long-term aim is to develop more technically proficient players and teams across all levels and assist veteran coaches, including those who coach professionally.

The goal of a dedicated Coaching Education is to provide a coach education system that supports, sustains and grows our sport by producing exceptional leaders, instructors and coaches.

Therefore, a clear pathway of Coaching Education is imminent to uplift these young potential Coaches to higher level.

In this Country, we do not have any policies or program of such nature for Malaysian Hockey at all levels but we had numerous of "bengkels/workshops" reporting on social media till I have lost count..

P/S - As for Indoor Coaching Education, similar approach could be implemented after selecting good young potential Coaches after the National Indoor Hockey League that begins next month.

TUN ABDUL RAZAK HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

When the late Tun Abdul Razak was elected MHF president in 1957, he saw the need to have an annual inter state tournament. He worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality and even donated a trophy for this purpose.

All his hard work paid dividends when in 1963 the first inter state tournament was organised and the competition was named the Tun Abdul Razak Cup in honour of the man who thought up the idea.

Singapore won the inaugural tournament and the Tun Abdul Razak Cup has been held every year since. Kuala Lumpur are the most successful side, having won 19 editions.

The Tun Abdul Razak Cup is recognised as the Premier Hockey Tournament in Malaysia and it is no surprise many national players first cut their teeth playing in it.

After many years in 2011, under the former Presidency of His Majesty Al-Sultan Abdullah  decided to re-engineer this event for a better outlook of high quality matches for teams and to compete for a longer period of time and be well prepared for final stage. With that, the 49th Tun Abdul Razak Cup which saw the tournament entering a new era with a qualifying event.

Unlike previous years where the competition was held over two weeks or less, the idea of His Majesty was that Tun Abdul Razak Cup teams battling it out for two months, first in their respective zones and then in the final round where the 20 teams will be separated into two divisions of 10 teams each. Brilliant approach by Former President His Majesty.

This reengineered version ensured that teams and players will have two months of competitive hockey via The Zonal qualifying rounds. The top two teams from each of the five Zones will qualify for the First Division while the bottom two teams will move into the Second Division. The final round will be held at National Hockey Stadium.

The 20 Teams are made of All 16 affiliates with the National Under-16 squad, Brunei, Singapore and Labuan featuring as invited sides.

The five Zones are as follows: North (Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Armed Forces), Central (Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Project 2017), South (Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Singapore), East (Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang, PDRM), West (Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, Brunei). The fixtures shall cater for four zones and as for West Zone, the Annual Borneo Cup standings shall be used as an indication for Final Round.

Tun Abdul Razak Cup is one of the oldest hockey competition in Malaysia. It used to be the Premier Hockey event and most popular one but over the years it has lost its essence and significant without the qualifying round and maintaining back to 2 weeks Carnival format.

But this year edition 58th Tun Abdul Razak Cup needs revamp and soul searching to make this event as "The Premier Event" rather than just completing the Calendar.

Key Flaws of this years' Edition:

1. Fixtures

The person who drafted the fixture needs further technical training as many flaws such as - certain team plays night matches; 9.30 & 3.00 matches unfair to teams: next round should follow FIH Appendix 5 rule rather than draw lots (funny as event classification matches need to draw lot - first of its kind as done in sixes or nine a side events but this a Premier event); women biased due to X & Y where Champion gets 2 runner-up teams; back to back matches for teams - lack of sufficient rest between matches.

Due to bad fixtures, many players including National players got injured and it affected the tempo of match and recovery of fitness between matches wasn't a consideration as a priority.

2. Weather

When you decide an event, kindly look at weather as we all know that month of March/April and September/October are monsoon period. No proper thoughts given on weather conditions as there is no any contingency plan could fit in this cramped 71 matches utilizing 2 pitches.

3. No Video Referral

When video referrals were first introduced as a trial at the men's Champions Trophy in Melbourne, Australia in 2009, the aim was to provide a way of reducing umpiring errors that may have a major impact on the result of a match. The system was quickly approved and used in the subsequent World Cup in Delhi in 2010.

After more than a decade, still not implemented consistently in National Championships such as MHL (one or 2 season with few matches only), JHL, Razak Cup & Sukma. Then how do our players and Umpires get used to this Video Referral. Actually it requires a minimum costing and easy to implement but the Organiser care less on the importance of such tool.

4. No Dedicated Website for the Event

Due to Covid19, there should be a dedicated Website for fans and hockey lovers to follow the statistics similarly to a TMS system on real time. But no thoughts put in!

But under the scoreboard there is a website - www.mhccompetitions.com but is defunct and non operational as it leads to different non relevant web.

Even if there is a web but not many people aware of such information. No any hashtag or promo of any website for the event.

5. Format

With one Division, the format has failed as the gap between teams are huge in standard of play, margin of goals very high, no promotion & demotion between Division, no fair play of competitiveness and kill the motivation of participating teams as spending about 20-25k to play in this event.

6. Men & Women Event

It doesn't make sense to organize both events together due to:

- Overstretch of Resources such as Umpires & Technical Support.

- Publicity lopsided for Men more than Women

- Live Telecast siding Men more than Women

- Women Teams have to play most matches in Morning session

7. Guest Teams

Organisers could consider inviting foreign teams to play in this event next year as to create more excitement and competitiveness.

Invite teams like Thailand, Singapore or Clubs from India, Australia, Pakistan or even from Europe as it will be a 2 weeks event.

For sure there are more than 7 points for the event to improve its stature. These are just the key points to improve this event further.

Anyway, Congratulation to Selangor Hockey for finishing 12th out of 15 Teams even playing 3 pool matches at night and with the special support of National Coach. It shows the sport is declining drastically in standard in the State of Selangor. The facts of performance over the years doesn't lie in determining the real current level of decay.

Selangor won 10 times this event and the team been playing in Division 2 since 2015 and failing to win any age group National Championship indicates that it needs an urgent CPR procedure to save it. Sad state of affairs. Selangor used to produce many top International Hockey players including Coaches, Umpires and Technical personnel.

Way Forward, Selangor Hockey should call for a "Open Town Hall Session" by inviting all former Coaches & Former International and State players origin from Selangor to discuss openly without fear or favour on how to improve the standard of Men's Hockey and thereafter get the right people to be involved in the game across the board. Keep the politics aside for the sake of the State and sports. There are many capable people outside there who are eager and willing to help directly or indirectly. Be open and dare to call them and establish a common goal among all the stakeholders to drive this sports to greater heights.

Tomorrow will be the Closing of the Event as for Men the battle will be between Terengganu and Perak whereas for Women it will be between Selangor and  Pahang. Best wishes and may the best team wins.

P/S - As to all the readers out there, I would like to say "Thank You" for visiting this blog as viewer stats has passed 35k views.

"Drama Minggu Ini" - Naming of the Coach for Women National Hockey

After K Dharmaraj decided not to renew his contract last year December, then the hunt begins. To be honest, Dharma did well with the Women Team but just because of certain egoistic leader, the renewal was not addressed.

They say had received 23 applications (11 locals and 12 foreigners) and took 9 months to decide today.

This are the Foreigners List listed below:

They must be given an Oscar award for this process of appointment.

And the title of the movie that wins the Oscar is called "Women Asia No 1 in 2026" and directed by Kamal and produced by So Sweet Production.

Many online interviews held and showed the typical Wayang Kulit that a foreigner of high status will be appointed.

Really pity our local media & Nadi Arena that covered this episode since Jan wrote many articles about all the Wayang Kulit towards the announcement but a local is named. Currently, our media personnel are very tolerant people and no longer an entity that plays a check and balance outlook by seeking the right questions and putting the sports on the right track.

Also Pity the DG of NSC attended many online interviews and is a very rare scenario for a DG of NSC to attend interview at NSA's Office.

Even the Technical Director so call Paul Revington is yet to be seen and as usual too many Wayang Kulit. Is he coming to Malaysia?

Finally, Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu approach, reappointment of Mohd Nasihin as the Head Coach of National Women Hockey Team today.

Nasihin was a former National Women Hockey Coach before joining as GK, Assistant Coach and Team Manager for Men's Team.

Best part they said Nasihin will present his plans and given 2 months to come up with it. What is strange, isn't he is appointed due to his submission of his plan, experience and ideas on how to improve the Women National Team.

How come you appoint someone and then ask him to come out of a plan.

Will Nasihin agree to this methodology - They have combined both the women's seniors and juniors into one outfit.

Congratulations and wish him the very best and hope the ecosystem will be well provided and never allow people dictate terms.

If it was supposed to be a local appointment, then they should have appointed Nasihin in January or February. Time wasted and so much of perception sent out to hockey fraternity over 9 months. Finally, a baby is born. Yahoo!

The last International match our National Women played was last year June 2019. This lost of time will haunt you in your preparation, physiology and performance aspects of the National Team.

I think suddenly they realised that someone needs to select a National Women Team as the ongoing Razak Cup W is in action. As usual a decision is made after thoughts.

On another episode, it will be suicidal decision that Lailin will use National Junior team to play in Asian Champions Trophy as part of their exposure before JAC. You must remember that there will be ranking points in play. And don't insult the Senior AHF tournament by sending a junior team and get hammered as Japan, China, India are preparing for Tokyo Olympics. Q: Will Nasihin agree to this as now he is the Head Coach. There must a clear define line between Senior and Junior program with short, mid and long term targets.

Even if you realize in the Razak Cup many teams send their Sukma teams as part of training. After Day 1, the standard between teams are too far and merging both division is not a good idea. There will be massive goal margins between good and a average teams. Even no video referral implemented which is an important tool for any dispute and it will be a good training ground for players and Umpires. But who cares!

Kindly stop the crap of using the ongoing Razak Cup to evaluate the players performance to select a new National Team. My friend, the talent in Razak Cup is depleted badly and the same players will be selected again. And many old players may return again on the list. The standard of this event is very low and lack competitiveness, more so many players has put on weight and struggling to cope the requirements of a high tempo match.

Are you selecting a National Team or International Team? This is the valid question! How to win 2022 Asian Games Gold as promised to the Nation as a basis of your appointment. Dream on...

On the Project Squads, the custodian failed to realize that FIH has decided that Junior World Cup is to be held in every 2 years. As of today, you should already have a Coaching Structure and National Under 18 team in placed for Men & Women to put a challenge for 2023 JWC and the qualifier Jnr Asia Cup may be in 2022 or 2023. This is called forward thinking but Wayang Kulit is the order of the day.

As we all know, they killed the preparation of Project 2021 Squad since 2016. Looks like they have never learn a lesson.

Finally, as a former Selangor Captain - MALULAH Draw with Sabah. Why? you want to know the answer, its easy similar people and approach implemented at Federal and State level. Same People with Same Thinking...Kasi chance due to Sabah election kot...

And to be in Selangor Razak Cup team, one key criteria is you must be "fat"...

How come a paid staff Coach allowed to coach Selangor when others not allowed to play for KL and NS due to employment or part of the system. Double standard betul lah...

Does Razak Cup Complying with COVID-19 RMCO & Do the Organizer has Return to Competition Protocol for All Stakeholders

Tun Abdul Razak Cup is one of the oldest hockey competition in Malaysia. It used to be the Premier Hockey event and most popular one but over the years it has lost its essence and significant.

This will be the first event for MHC to organize after the pandemic issues since March 2020. There will be a total of 76 Matches combining Men & Women sections and commences from 18th September till 26th September and will held at both National Hockey Stadium in KL Sports City.

The question is does the Organiser got all the relevant approval from Government and other agencies such as MOH, KBS, Sports Commissioner and PSM to host this event during this extended RMCO announced by the Government that will take effect till 31st December 2020.

The health and safety of players, umpires and officials is important and you just need one person to create a cluster of the pandemic. Anyway for a first time in history, this event would be played without any spectators including the family members of players and others.

Next question, did the Organiser come up with a detail "Return to Competition Protocol" and discuss with all relevant stakeholders. Organiser via Executive Board must established a COVID-19 Management Committee (CMS) team which comprise of health experts for overseeing this protocol and implement accordingly during competition and other related matters.

Anyway, read below how a good "Return to Competition Protocol" looks like and this document is more crucial and important than rules & regulations as human life's are at stake.

Organizers Responsibilities:

1. Ensure that a list of those travelling with the team for the match is received.

2. Contact details for all match officials (umpires; technical officials) should be recorded prior to the competition. For officially appointed umpires and technical officials, these details will be available through the TD & Umpires Manager.

3. Communicate the COVID-19 management committee (CMC) to the team, umpires, and technical officials.

4. Ensure that an arrival time for all travelling parties has been agreed and confirmed.

5. Ensure that the list of those travelling is correct when players and officials arrive at the stadium.

6. A CMC must be present during the build-up phase of the match and remain at the stadium until the team and match officials have departed after the match to ensure COVID-19 protocols are always adhered to.

7. Ensure that teams have designated areas on the pitch to base themselves safely. This includes an area for umpires and for match officials.

8. Ensure that there is sufficient space for substitutes and coaching/management staff for each team to allow social distancing when not playing. Please consider player safety when doing so (e.g. minimise the risk of a player being hit by a ball).

9. Ensure that an area is designated for suspended players for each team and allow for additional space should several players be suspended at one time.

10. Ensure that the Organizer is following governmental guidelines for numbers of people allowed inside the facility.

11. Ensure that only essential match personnel (players; umpires; coaches etc) are allowed inside the pitch in the lead up to and during matches.

12. Dressing rooms and showers should only be made available if essential and current government guidelines on the use of indoor facilities should always be strictly enforced. A detailed cleaning regime should be put in place by the home club.

Match Specific Guidance (for all stakeholders): Please note: Umpires are responsible for the conduct of players, coaches etc., in accordance with the Rules of Hockey, within the playing area (the pitch and outer playing area) & COVID-19 measures within the field of play.

The CMC is responsible for the conduct of players, coaches etc, in respect of COVID-19 social distancing and compliance with the guidance, outside of the pitch (this includes the outer playing area/benches).

Player and Match Guidelines:

1. All match personnel (players, coaches, umpires etc.) should follow social distancing guidelines while waiting for the pitch to fully clear from any previous activity.

2. Teams must not complete line-ups, handshakes/high-fives or huddles prior to the start of the match, or before the start of each quarter. a. This will be enforced through the offending team’s captain receiving a verbal warning in the first instance, a green card personal penalty may be awarded to the captain for repeated offences.

3. Ball patrol should not be used for any matches.

4. Players should avoid coming within 2m of an umpire or technical official. If players are asked to retreat from an umpire and fail to do so, they will be issued a personal penalty.

5. Players are discouraged from celebrating goals as a group. a. This will be enforced through the offending team’s captain receiving a verbal warning in the first instance, a green card personal penalty may be awarded to the captain for repeated offences.

6. During penalty corners, defenders must have their own, clearly marked defensive equipment. Equipment must not be shared between team-mates. Umpires will manage the time needed to allow players to put on their own equipment (players are encouraged to avoid any unnecessary delay and to assist the umpires at all times).

7. Players must not spit or clear their nose on the field of play. If this is observed by an umpire, they will issue a green card to the offending player. A repeated offence by any player will result in a further upgrading in the sanction. a. It is acknowledged that umpires will not be able to see every occurrence of this. It is up to players to take personal responsibility and not engage in this behaviour.

8. Players must not deliberately cough in the face of any other player, umpire, official, ball patrol or spectator. A red card will be issued for this offence, if witnessed by officials. a. It is acknowledged that normal coughs happen within play and cannot always be controlled. Normal coughs that occur at a distance or that are not deemed to be intentional acts of potential harm should not be sanctioned.

9. When an injury occurs that requires attention, an agreed member of the team of the injured player should attend to the play. Standard first aid protocols apply.

10. Both teams should supply managers and officials with their own equipment. E.g. captains and managers should have their own pen for signing match cards.

11. Non-playing members of each squad (substitutes; coaches; management) must ad here to social distancing guidelines when not on the field of play. It is the responsibility of the home club to ensure sufficient space is provided for this.

Note: There must be Technical Officials, Medical Team & Umpiring COVID-19 Guidelines in-placed for Pre Match, During Match & Post Match.

Don't say I didn't warn you all.... Hope nothing happens between 14 days - a period that will dictate virus existence.

To all players & participating teams, you are in control and demand for a better protocol during competition. And is your rights to seek it as health is the ultimate concern during this period of time!

YAYASAN HOKI MALAYSIA & THANK YOU...

Yayasan Hoki Malaysia (YHM) came to existence  during Almarhum DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah era as the President of Malaysian Hockey Federation.

It started with 3 former Internationals such as MA Sambu, Dr Brian and K Enbaraj. The reality existed then MA Sambu had finished his 6th Form and was awaiting to enter varsity and finance was an issue. Similarly with Dr Brian, who was given the opportunity to pursue a Medical degree was in a dilemma. K Enbaraj, then one of the finest fullback in the world felt that his career in Maybank may be severely affected because of his continuous absence from work due to National call up.

These matters came to Almarhum DYMM knowledge and these were not the only cases but credit to be given to this 3 brave former Internationals MA Sambu, Brian and Enbaraj who raised their concern and pushed for the establishment of this YHM.

Then the Almarhum DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah has always wanted something to be done for the welfare of players and the idea was to create an environment where players employed had something to fall back when they retired from hockey, while those aiming to further their studies could find an avenue to seek funding.

His Highness fell if such an environment existed, it would provide a greater peace of mind and the players could concentrate in the sports.

A group of renowned personalities and MHF Officials including some Affiliates set to work out how His Highness's concern for the plight of players could be addressed. And the YHM was created on the 10th March 1992. Membership of the Foundation comprises of Corporate Members, Ordinary Members and Honorary Members.

YHM has awarded many players with scholarship and benefited from Retirement Scheme. This schemes elevating many players in term of education and employment opportunities.

Retirement scheme is given based on Official Caps and this lump sum pay out helped many former International in buying home and utilizing this funds for family and helping out parents.

The Almarhum DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah's with MHF EXCO members vision and  and insistence that the Yayasan Hoki Malaysia be created for a better way of life for the Players is without doubt a significant contribution in elevating the plight of players.

All the beneficiaries including myself shall always remember Almarhum DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah and its MHF EXCO members for their  caring nature and the concern for the well being of players while serving the Country. We thank you, Almarhum DYMM Sultan Azlan and MHF EXCO members to establish this foundation and assisted us in many ways in our life as players and beyond.

As a former International, I strongly believe that current President of MHC and Officials should create and form a Welfare Foundation for Current & Former Internationals and Hockey Officials including Coaches, TO, Umpires and Judges.

In the towards of the last election, at least Dato Kamaruddin Meranun of Air Asia was very keen to establish such foundation if elected but he withdrew his nomination with other qualified candidates.

Therefore, it is time for current MHC to look into this Welfare Foundation and it's principle objectives should be:

1. To assist in Retirement, Insurance, Death and Hospitalization Benefits for Players, Coaches and Officials

2. Establishing a Hockey Welfare Council to maintain and administer Scholarship Funds

3. To establish a Malaysian Hockey Institute to promote, develop and advance hockey at elite level

4. To subscribe and to grant donations to local or national or educational institutions or other charities for patriotic or public purposes.

As of today, there are many players who has retired from International scene in last few years and still in doubts of their entitlement such as Retirement benefits and availability of scholarships to further their education.

I was told that many just retired former international players were seeking for answers from MHC about their Retirement Benefits but it has been a futile exercise till today.

Hope the current MHC Officials will take this plight as an urgent task to establish a foundation to assist the concern of current and former players with Officials who have served the Nation and brought glory to Malaysia.

This are the kind of innovative ideas that MHC Officials should think to uplift the standard of well being and welfare of players and Officials.
