Hockey is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since 1998 when Kuala Lumpur hosted the games. Hockey is a core sport and must be included in the sporting program of each edition of the Games.
Malaysian Men’s Hockey:
Malaysian team withdrew from 2022 Birmingham Games
and the reason best known to them but I disagree with such decision as quality
international matches is key or else send a mixed team and now with Asian Games
postponed next year 2023 it backfired the decision. Wasted opportunity.
Since hockey introduced in 1998, Malaysian Men
participated in 5 Commonwealth Games and winning a silver medal in 1998 Kuala
Lumpur and bronze in 2006 Melbourne Games. Last Games in Australia we finished
5th.
Australia Men’s team won all 6 Games since 1998
to 2018. And New Zealand won twice silver in 2002 & 2018 Games with India 2
silver medals in 2010 & 2014 games. Pakistan won 1 silver in 2006 &
bronze in 2002.
Overall, 14 Nations has participated and Ghana
will be the first timer in such Games.
Malaysian Men’s best [performance is winning
Silver Medal in 1998 KL Commonwealth Games.
Malaysian Women’s Hockey:
Malaysian Women withdrew from 2022 Birmingham
Games.
Malaysian women never break in to semifinal
stage and best finished 5th in 2006 Games.
Participated 6 times since 1998 to 2018 but
decided not to play in 2022 Games.
Australia won 5 times with India breaking the
dominance by winning Gold in 2002.
Overall, 16 Nations has played in such Games.
